AMHERST, Mass. —The Kent State women's basketball team was defeated by host UMass, 66-56, on Wednesday evening.
The Golden Flashes (13-14, 7-8 MAC) struggled to knock down shots and finished the contest going 17-of-66 on field goal attempts for 25.6-percent, the lowest since the season opener at James Madison.
Shooting struggles did not deter Kent State from battling on the glass. The Flashes grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and scored 15 second chance points. Sophomore Emory Klatt led the way with seven offensive boards. Klatt added seven on the defensive end to finish with a career-high 14 rebounds, the most by a Kent State player this season.
UMass knocked down four of its first six shots for an early 11-6 lead. The Flashes' deficit reached six on an Aiyanna Perkins' three-pointer with 2:46 remaining in the first quarter. Kent State's defense then forced eight consecutive missed shots and held the Minutewomen scoreless for five minutes. Graduate student Bianca Juzzo tied it at 17-17 early in the second period, but a scoreless stretch of nearly five minutes followed. The Flashes closed the period strong to get within 27-25 at halftime.
Kent State tied it three more times during the third period but was unable to take the lead. The Flashes made just one field goal over the final five minutes of the third quarter and trailed 45-41 entering the fourth.
UMass made five of its first six shots to start the final period and eventually pushed its advantage to double-digits for the first time. The Flashes continued to battle defensively and forced six turnovers over the final five minutes of the night.
Junior Mya Babbitt led Kent State with 11 points. Klatt and junior Riley Rismiller added nine points each.
The Flashes will host Central Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 28 as the regular season ends with two of three games at the M.A.C. Center.
