KENT, Ohio — The Kent State Flashes capped off a dominant weekend series at Schoonover Stadium on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Rhode Island to complete a three-game series sweep. After edging the Rams 8-7 in 13 innings on Friday, the Flashes outscored Rhode Island 19-4 across both Saturday contests to improve to 8-3 on the season.
Game One: Kent State 7, Rhode Island 1
The first game of the doubleheader was a tighter affair early on, but Kent State's offense eventually broke through for a 7-1 victory.
The Flashes got on the board first in the second inning when Alejandro Covas singled home Brady Marshall for a 1-0 lead. Rhode Island answered with a run in the third to tie the game, but Kent State took control with a three run sixth inning that featured a hit-by-pitch RBI from Kolton Schaller, a run-scoring fielder's choice by pinch hitter Max Humphrey, and one of the more exciting plays of the day, Humphrey drawing a throw on a caught stealing attempt while Brady Marshall alertly stole home to make it 4-1.
The Flashes added two more in the seventh on an Luke Matthews RBI bunt single and a Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe double that plated Matthews, and capped the scoring with a Matthews RBI single in the eighth.Â
Matthews went 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead the offense, while Brody Williams was 3-for-4, and Covas finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Easton Tumis was excellent on the hill, earning his second win of the year with six innings of one-run ball, allowing just five hits while striking out two. Brody Krzysiak came on in relief and was lights out, striking out three and allowing no hits over the final three innings to earn his second save of the season.
Game Two: Kent State 12, Rhode Island 3
The Flashes saved their biggest offensive performance of the weekend for last, erupting for 12 runs and 10 hits in the doubleheader finale to cap the series sweep.
Kent State broke things open in the bottom of the second inning, and designated hitter Kolton Schaller was the story of the game. He went 2-for-3 with two home runs and a remarkable seven RBI on the day. His first blast came in the second inning, a grand slam to right field that plated Brady Marshall, Ripken Reese, and Brody Williams to give the Flashes a 4-0 lead. Schaller went deep again in the third, a three-run shot that extended the Kent State advantage to 7-0. Sawyer Solitaria also homered on the day, with a solo shot in the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
Brody Williams and Brady Marshall each went 2-for-4 and reached base multiple times, while Solitaria finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
On the mound, Ben Rabatin earned his first win of the season, tossing five innings and striking out five. Evan Holewski was dominant in relief, retiring all 12 batters he faced over four innings with eight strikeouts to close out the game and the series.
Rhode Island's lone highlight was a Jayden Tolentino three-run home run in the fourth inning, but it was too little too late against a Flashes offense that had already built an insurmountable lead.
