KENT, Ohio — The Kent State Flashes were unable to build on Friday's series-opening win, falling to the Bowling Green Falcons 7-2 on Saturday at Schoonover Stadium to even the MAC series at one game apiece. The Flashes dropped to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Kent State grabbed an early lead in the second inning when Kolton Schaller doubled down the right field line and eventually scored on a Hunter Klotz RBI single to left. The Flashes briefly made it 4-2 in the third when Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe came around to score on a Schaller RBI single, but Bowling Green had already done significant damage by that point.
The Falcons blew the game open in the third inning, erupting for four runs against starter Easton Tumis. Zack Horky got things started with an RBI single, Sam Seidel followed with a run-scoring fielder's choice, and Vinny Salvione ripped a triple to right field to plate Seidel. Anthony Mitta then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Salvione and put Bowling Green ahead 4-1. The Falcons added two more in the sixth on a TJ Takats RBI single and a Horky sacrifice fly, and tacked on an unearned run in the eighth to account for the final 7-2 score.
Tumis, who had been sharp in his previous outing, took the loss and fell to 2-1 on the season, allowing six runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. Bowling Green's Nate Kress was equally impressive in the other direction, earning his second win of the year by limiting the Flashes to two runs on six hits over five innings. Reliever Ethan Stade was virtually untouchable in relief, striking out 11 of the 15 batters he faced over four scoreless innings.
The Flashes finished with seven hits on the day but were unable to string them together consistently, stranding eight runners and going without a walk on the afternoon.
The Flashes and Falcons wrap up the series tomorrow, Sunday, March 8, at 1 p.m. at Schoonover Stadium.
