DEKALB, Ill. – Kent State baseball hits the road this weekend for a three-game Mid-American Conference (MAC) series at Northern Illinois, beginning Friday, April 10, and running through Sunday, April 12.Â
The Golden Flashes arrive having won their last five games, including a midweek win over rival Akron on Wednesday, and carry a 24-7 overall record and 12-3 MAC mark into the weekend, which is the best winning percentage in the conference and 13th-best in the nation at .774.Â
Northern Illinois enters at 18-10 overall and 10-5 in MAC play, sitting third in the conference standings and riding a competitive stretch of baseball that has made the Huskies one of the more legitimate challengers to Kent State's grip on the MAC. This is the most significant conference series the Flashes have faced since hosting Miami (OH) in late March, and the outcome could have significant implications for the MAC standings heading into the final month of the regular season.
A Battle of MAC Title Contenders
This is a matchup with genuine MAC title implications on both sides. Kent State has been the MAC's standard-bearer all season on the mound, leading the conference in ERA (4.81), WHIP (1.31), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.58), and walks allowed per nine innings (3.47), with all four categories ranking inside the top 35 nationally. The Flashes have held opponents to a .241 batting average and struck out 274 batters in 275 innings, doing so against a schedule that has included legitimate competition throughout.
Northern Illinois has carved out its own identity as one of the MAC's better programs in 2026, and the Huskies present a very different challenge than the teams Kent State has faced in recent weeks. NIU's pitching staff ranks second in the MAC in WHIP (1.47) and hits allowed per nine innings (8.54), and their two primary starters, Max Vaisvila and Danny Cihocki, are among the most accomplished arms in the conference. The Huskies also own a .976 team fielding percentage, second-best in the MAC. This won't be the same kind of weekend the Flashes enjoyed against Ohio, and Kent State will need to be sharp in all phases to take the series.
Kent State's Offense Is Hitting Its Peak
The Flashes have been one of the most explosive offenses in the MAC all season, and the numbers have only gotten stronger heading into April. Kent State is scoring 8.6 runs per game, which is second in the MAC and 26th nationally, and has posted a .286 team batting average, fourth in the conference and 92nd nationally. The Flashes rank second in the MAC in runs (266), on-base percentage (.415), and stolen bases (69), and third in home runs (38) and slugging percentage (.463). They've drawn 178 walks as a team, third in the MAC, and have been hit by 64 pitches — creating a near-constant presence on the bases.
Sawyer Solitaria continues to be one of the most productive players in college baseball. Through 31 games, he is hitting .339 with 10 home runs, 31 RBIs, and a .645 slugging percentage. His 78 total bases rank third in the MAC, and his .468 on-base percentage reflects a hitter who combines elite power with a patient approach at the plate. He has drawn 26 walks and been hit five times while going a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts, and his home run total ranks second in the MAC and 66th nationally.
Ripken Reese has emerged as one of the conference's most dangerous hitters in the second half of his season, batting .314 with seven home runs, 26 RBIs, and a .576 slugging percentage. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe (.303, 25 RBIs, .444 OBP) continues to produce consistent results, and Brady Marshall (.304, .490 OBP) remains one of the most difficult leadoff men to navigate in the MAC, with 28 runs scored, 18 walks, nine hit-by-pitches, and nine stolen base attempts in just 21 starts. Nolan Belcher (.328, four HR, 18 RBIs) has been a revelation in an expanded role and brings a .435 OBP to the lineup, while Alejandro Covas (.316, three HR) has also elevated his production significantly over the last two weeks.
Brody Williams (.278, 30 RBIs) is one of the MAC's most productive catchers, and Luke Matthews (.243) continues to find ways to create runs with 29 scored, 12 stolen bases, 15 walks, and nine hit-by-pitches in 30 games. Kolton Schaller (.250, five HR, 23 RBI) provides middle-of-the-order depth, and the Flashes' lineup has genuine threats from top to bottom. NIU's pitching staff has issued 127 walks in 242.1 innings, and an offense as disciplined as Kent State's will look to capitalize.
Northern Illinois Has One of the MAC's Most Dangerous Power Threats
If Kent State's pitching staff has a player to gameplan around this weekend, it's Caden Robertson. The right fielder has been arguably the MAC's most productive power hitter in 2026, batting .333 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs, ranking third. His .686 slugging percentage is 4th in the MAC and ranks 66th nationally, and his 1.38 RBI per game ranks third in the MAC.Â
Cole Smith has been one of the most consistent all-around hitters in the MAC, batting .381 with 13 doubles, three triples, three home runs, and 25 RBIs. His 43 hits rank sixth in the MAC, and his doubles total ranks second in the MAC. He's been the Huskies' most dependable contact threat all season. Gavin Baldwin (.252, six HR, 30 RBI) provides additional power from the lineup's middle and has been hit by 11 pitches. Ivan Dahlberg (.204) provides patience behind the plate, drawing 23 walks to post a .395 OBP.
Marcus Romero (.310, 11 stolen bases) gives the Huskies a speed element in the lineup, while Nolan Sandee (.304, .438 OBP) and Wyatt Wawro (.297, .439 OBP) add on-base value that makes NIU's lineup difficult to navigate from front to back.
The Pitching Matchups
Friday — Caughey vs. Cihocki
Kent State sends its ace to open the series, and Ciaran Caughey enters Friday's start as comfortably the most accomplished pitcher in the weekend's rotation. Through eight starts and 41.2 innings, Caughey is 4-0 with a 2.59 ERA, 45 strikeouts, and a 1.01 WHIP that ranks second in the MAC and 44th nationally. His 4.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio is fourth in the conference, and his 6.91 hits allowed per nine innings ranks sixth in the MAC. He was recently named to the College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Year Watch List.
NIU counters with right-hander Danny Cihocki, who is 2-2 with a 3.72 ERA across eight starts and 46.0 innings. He ranks seventh in the MAC in ERA among qualified starters and has struck out 44 batters, second on NIU's staff behind Vaisvila. His 6.65 hits allowed per nine innings ranks fourth in the MAC.
Saturday — Tumis vs. Vaisvila
Saturday's matchup is the most compelling pitching duel of the series and potentially the best individual pitching matchup Kent State has faced all season. Max Vaisvila is the MAC's best pitcher by several measures — carrying a 5-0 record, 2.66 ERA, and a 0.97 WHIP that leads the conference and ranks 33rd nationally across 50.2 innings. He leads the MAC in strikeouts with 51, and his 4.64 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks third in the conference, and he's one of 11 pitchers in the country to have thrown two complete games this season.Â
Easton Tumis enters Saturday's start as one of the MAC's most efficient arms in terms of walk prevention. He is 5-2 with a 4.91 ERA through eight starts and 40.1 innings, and he leads the MAC and ranks 25th nationally in walks allowed per nine innings (1.34). His 4.83 strikeout-to-walk ratio leads the conference, and his 1.14 WHIP ranks seventh in the MAC. Tumis was also named to the College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Year Watch List.
Sunday — Rabatin vs. Cox
Ben Rabatin has been one of Kent State's most quietly effective starters all season, going 4-0 with a 4.15 ERA across eight starts and 39.0 innings. He has struck out 43 batters while issuing only 14 walks, and his perfect record reflects a pitcher who has consistently delivered in the moments that matter.Â
Carter Cox enters Sunday's start at 3-2 with a 7.09 ERA across eight starts and 33.0 innings. He has struck out 41 batters, and his 11.18 strikeouts per nine innings ranks fourth in the MAC, making him a legitimate swing-and-miss option against unprepared hitters. But Cox has also allowed 37 hits and seven home runs and issued 17 walks, giving Kent State's disciplined lineup plenty of opportunities to work counts and do damage in the later innings.
First pitch for the series opener is set for 3 p.m. Eastern.
