Kent State Drops Overtime Game in Marathon Against VCU

EVANSTON, Ill. – Kent State Field Hockey lost a 0-1 overtime nail-biter against VCU on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams got their first win of the season after a close loss to top-ranked Northwestern on Friday. Meanwhile, Kent State has been in two grueling defensive battles this year, both resulting in one-goal losses to their record.

The Golden Flashes had a variety of good chances to score throughout the contest, outshooting the Rams 16-11 through five periods of play. The first quarter was particularly dominant for KSU as they didn't allow a VCU shot, while tallying six of their own.

The second quarter was much more evenly matched, while the third quarter provided another offensively lopsided period for Kent State. The Golden Flashes were consistently in Rams territory, notching seven more shots in the last 10 minutes of the frame.

Kent State's senior midfielder Eva Usoz had another impressive game with a team leading two shots on goal. Senior forward Maybritt Duwel tied Usoz with three total shots in the game, but neither were able to put the ball in the back of the net.

VCU goalkeeper Emma Clements was largely responsible for limiting the damage on Kent State's multitude of attacks. The redshirt junior from Fredericksburg, Va. had five saves in the game.

The battle came to a halt with two minutes and 44 seconds left in the third quarter as severe lightning storms crossed over the Chicago area. After the half an hour delay, the third quarter resumed and it was still scoreless heading into the fourth.

Possibly the best chance for Kent State to score in the game came halfway through the fourth quarter. Junior forward Tess Gately went coast-to-coast down the field before forcing a penalty corner. Fifth-year defender Lauren Conroy ended up with a corner shot for the Golden Flashes, but missed the net just wide.

After some more back-and-forth, the clock hit zeroes and the battle continued into overtime. Extra hockey wasn't as kind to Kent State as regulation was as VCU took control of the tempo and possession of the ball. The marathon of a game culminated in the 68^th minute when VCU's Carley Deaver scored off an assist from Julia Spohr to give the Rams the 1-0 overtime victory.

The Golden Flashes will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. next weekend to take on the nationally 14^th-ranked Michigan Wolverines and the Vermont Catamounts.
