Kent State Travels to Ohio Stadium Saturday for Big Noon Kickoff Against Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kent State football makes the trip to Columbus on Saturday, visiting Ohio Stadium for a noon kickoff against Ohio State. The Golden Flashes (1-1) enter the matchup with momentum after a 36-15 home-opening win over Wofford last week, while the Buckeyes (1-1) look to regroup in front of their home crowd following a 23-24 loss at Texas. Both programs arrive at 1-1, though the circumstances surrounding each record could not be more different, and Saturday's game offers Kent State an opportunity to measure its offseason growth against one of the nation's most talented rosters.
Kent State on offense
The Flashes have found an identity in the early going, generating 316 total yards per game and converting on third down at 48.48 percent, tops in the Mid-American Conference and 42nd nationally. Quarterback Dru DeShields has grown into a reliable dual-threat weapon: through two games, he has completed 28 of 45 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown while adding 101 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. His 208.5 yards of total offense per game ranks fifth in the MAC and 91st nationally. Wayne Harris has developed into his most productive target, hauling in eight receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown while averaging 53 receiving yards per game, 10th in the conference. Da'Realyst Clark provides a secondary spark with six catches for 91 yards and a team-high 82 all-purpose yards per game. Running back Mason King has paced the ground attack with 94 yards on 17 carries, and Jakorion Caffey contributed a rushing score in the win over Wofford. The Flashes also carry a perfect 4-of-4 red zone conversion mark into Columbus, tied for the top spot nationally, as they look to find the end zone against an Ohio State defense that has allowed just 13.5 points per game.
Kent State on defense
The strength of this Kent State team may rest with its defensive front. The Flashes have recorded six sacks through two games, leading the MAC and ranking 18th nationally, while holding opponents to a 35 percent conversion rate on third down. Linebacker Rocco Nicholl leads the charge with two sacks in two outings, ranking 23rd nationally and first in the MAC in that category. Hayden Dawahare has been arguably the most disruptive presence on the roster, recording three tackles for loss through two games, a rate of 1.50 per game that leads the MAC and ranks 26th nationally. Rafael Terrero Jr. delivered one of the defensive highlights of the young season against Wofford, returning an interception 63 yards for a touchdown, while Jaihien Roy has added an interception and ranks second in the MAC with 1.50 passes defended per game. The unit will face its most significant test of the season Saturday against a Buckeye offense averaging 521.5 yards per game.
Special teams
Punter Jake Stoeckel has been a consistent asset in the field position battle, averaging 44.5 yards on 10 punts, fourth in the MAC and 22nd nationally, with six of his attempts landing inside the 20-yard line. Clark has handled kick return duties, averaging 18.25 yards on four returns. Managing field position will be critical in a venue where Ohio State's explosive playmakers can turn short fields into quick scores, and Stoeckel's ability to pin the Buckeyes deep should factor heavily into the game plan.
Scouting Ohio State
Ohio State's offense is built around one of the most dangerous wide receivers in the country. Jeremiah Smith has caught 16 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns through two games, averaging 160 receiving yards per game, fifth nationally and second in the Big Ten, at an average of 19.69 yards per catch. Quarterback Julian Sayin has been efficient and productive, completing 38 of 57 passes for 598 yards and four touchdowns at a 66.67 percent clip, posting a passing efficiency rating of 174.4 that ranks 29th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten. The ground game presents a complementary two-pronged threat: Bo Jackson has totaled 157 yards and a score on 28 carries, while Ja'Kobi Jackson has added 103 yards and two touchdowns on 13 attempts. As a unit, the Buckeyes average 521.5 yards per game, 18th nationally and third in the Big Ten.
Defensively, Ohio State has been formidable, surrendering just 250.5 yards and 13.5 points per game. The Buckeyes' 92.92 passing efficiency ranks ninth nationally and second in the Big Ten, and the unit has held opponents to 93 rushing yards per game. Earl Little Jr. leads the team with 15 total tackles, Devin Sanchez has posted 10 solo stops and a tackle for loss, and Riley Pettijohn contributes two tackles for loss and a sack. Ohio State's special teams have also been active, as Connor Hawkins is 3-of-4 on field goals and 9-of-9 on extra points through two games.
