Jonathan Simpson will begin the spring as the starting tight end.
2009 Junior Season
Made four starts and played in 12 games as a tight end…caught seven passes for 66 yards (9.4 ypc) and two touchdowns…had a season-high three catches for 32 yards at Baylor Oct. 3…had receiving touchdowns at Boston College Sept. 12 and Eastern Michigan Oct. 17.
2008 Sophomore Season
Started 11 of 12 games at tight end…caught eight passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns, all career-bests…hauled in three passes for 43 yards at Ball State Sept. 27…made two receptions for 19 yards and a touchdown on Sept. 13 against Delaware State…pulled in the game-winning 25-yard touchdown catch with 5:57 left to play at Buffalo Nov. 28…presented with the Don Nottingham Award as the offensive player who made the biggest improvement during spring practice.
2007 Freshman Season
Appeared in 10 games on the season as a reserve tight end…caught two passes on the year for 14 yards…earned a varsity letter, one of nine true freshman to do so.
Prior to Kent State
Received honorable mention all-district honors following his senior season…totaled 29 receptions for 420 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his career…selected as one of the Top 50 weakside linebackers in the nation by Scout.com, despite only playing the position for part of one season at Hargrave Academy…also lettered in basketball…coached by Brian Maus at Nansemond River and by Robert Prunty at Hargrave.
