Former Penn State standout Abby Detering joined the Kent State women's volleyball program as an assistant coach in May 2019 and works primarily with the teamโs setters and offense.ย
Deteringโs impact was immediate, as the Golden Flashes led the Mid-American Conference in hitting percentage and ranked second in kills per set during her first season on the sideline. She has also been pivotal in the development of setter Alex Haffner, a two-time All-MAC performer who will enter her final season of eligibility in 2022 fourth on Kent Stateโs career assists list and just 56 digs away from becoming just the second setter in program history to tally 1,000. ย ย
Her collegiate career began at Florida before transferring to Penn State for her junior season, providing the unique opportunity to learn the game under the guidance of the two winningest head coaches in NCAA Division I history in Russ Rose and Mary Wise. She was part of 12 NCAA Tournament victories during her four seasons as a student-athlete.ย
While at Penn State, Detering saw time at setter and right side, totaling 1,793 assists and 254 kills in two seasons. She earned AVCA All-America honorable mention recognition as a senior while helping the Nittany Lions post a 33-2 record and earn a spot in the national semifinals.ย
Upon graduation at Penn State in December 2017, Detering signed a professional contract to play the remainder of the season with SG Kelag Klagenfurt of the Austrian A1 League. She played for Pays dโAix Venelles of the French A1 League during the 2018-19 seasonย
A native of Mentor, Detering earned a bachelor of communication arts and sciences from Penn State University.
