A native of Detroit, MI., Gates earned AP Honorable Mention All-American, NABC All-District First Team and All-MAC first team honors in 2003. He was also selected to the MAC All-Tournament Teams in 2002 and 2003 and the NCAA Tournament All-South Regional Team in 2002. Despite playing only two seasons for the Flashes, Gates ranks 13th all time in scoring (1,216) in school history. He also helped lead KSU to the MAC Championship and its only NCAA Elite 8 appearance. The San Diego Chargers would later sign Gates as an undrafted free agent. His professional accomplishments include becoming a five-time Pro Bowl Selection at tight end (2004-2008) and a three-time first team All-Pro selection (2004-2006).
