NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Montia Johnson, Larissa Lurken and CiCi Shannon all reached career-highs Sunday night (Nov. 24), but Kent State (1-4) could not hold off Belmont (3-4), losing 60-84.
The Golden Flashes were hot out of the gate, winning the opening tip and scoring on a fast break by Ashley Evans to open up the contest. They then went on an 11-6 run to have their largest lead of 13-6 three minutes into the game.
However, Kent State cooled off as Belmont found their rhythm. The Bruins took a 43-23 lead into the locker rooms at halftime after shooting 50% from the floor, including making seven of their 11 three-point attempts and connecting on all eight free throws in the first half. Kent State went on to shoot just 26.7% in the first to find themselves in the hole.
The Golden Flashes did have a strong showing in the second. In a minute span on the game clock, Kent State went on a 7-0 run, made possible by four forced turnovers on the full court press. But, they were not able to make the full comeback as the Bruins stayed on pace to shoot 51% in the game.
Johnson led all with a career-high 20 points that included a career-best seven field goals. Lurken followed by matching her career-high 17 points. She also had four assists. Shannon finished with a double-double with a 14 point, ten rebound effort, both career marks.
The season continues for Kent State next weekend as they take part of the David Jones Classic in Houston. They face host Houston on Saturday (Nov. 30) and Stephen F. Austin on Sunday (Dec. 1) before returning home for the remainder of 2013.
