With the Mid-American Conference Championships just around the corner on Feb. 22, the Kent State indoor track and field teams will continue preparation at the SPIRE NCAA DI Track & Field Invitational, hosted by the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Friday and Saturday.
The Golden Flashes will have the entire team back in action this weekend after several of the team's top field athletes did not compete in the jumps at this previous weekend's Akron Invitational.
Friday kicks off with the pole vault, which is the only field event of the opening day, at 5 p.m. Running events will begin with the 600-meter dash at 5:30. Saturday's action will begin at 11 a.m.
SCOUTING THE FLASHES
Kent State will have six athletes competing this weekend in events that they hold the top time in the MAC.
Freshman Dior Delophont (Nancy, France) holds the conference's top mark in both the high jump and triple jump. Delophont cleared 6'-07.50" in the high jump at the Akron Dual, which ranks seventh nationally. At the same meet, she recorded a mark of 42'-05.25" in the triple, which ranks eighth nationally.
Junior Shanequa Williams (Akron, Ohio) is entered in the 400-meter dash and clocked a MAC-best 54.64 at the Redbird Invitational a few weeks ago. Williams is the school record holder in the event with a time of 54.07 a year ago. She also owns the MAC's top time in the 200-meter dash (24.04).
Junior Katie Reiser (Wayne, Ohio) ran a conference-best 7.57 in the 60-meter dash a last weekend's Akron Invitational.
Junior Joh'vonnie Mosley (Youngstown, Ohio) ranks 21st in the nation in the shot put with toss of 53'-03.00" at the Doug Raymond Invitational.
On the men's side, senior Kenneth Agee (Shaker Heights, Ohio) is the only conference-leader in action in that event this weekend. Agee cleared a conference-best 7'-00.25" this past weekend.
Sophomore Matthias Tayala (McDonald, Ohio), the MAC leader in the weight throw, will be competing in the shot put on Saturday. Also competing in the event will be redshirt freshman Michael King (Salem, Ohio), who ranks second in the conference with a mark of 58'-08.75" at the Redbird Invitational.
MAC Male Track Athlete of the Week junior Marteze Roper (Warren, Ohio) will run the 800-meter dash and anchor the 4x400 relay team this weekend. Roper clocked a 1:50.99 in the 800-meter dash this past weekend, which ranks second in the MAC, and ran the opening leg of the distance medley relay, helping the Golden Flashes take first place with a conference-best time of 10:06.44.
