Johnson Posts Double-Double, But Flashes Fall 43-65

DEKALB, Ill. – Despite a 16 point, 10 rebound performance by Montia Johnson, Kent State (3-16, 0-8 MAC) could not come up with a win against Northern Illinois (8-10, 4-4 MAC) losing 43-65 on the road Wednesday night (Jan. 29).
The Golden Flashes scored first in the game to take an early 2-0 lead, but it was the only advantage they would have in the contest. Kent State kept it close in the first half, not allowing Northern Illinois to get a lead greater than ten points until the Husskies went up 33-20 at the halfway point.
In the second half, the Golden Flashes would bring the lead to within nine points with 9:39 to go after they continued to draw fouls and connect at the free throw line within a few minute span on the game clock.
However, that was as close as the Huskies would let them get, as the home team surged ahead to capture the 43-65 victory.
Johnson had her second double-double in conference play to lead all on the night in scoring and rebounding. She also added in two steals. Ashley Evans followed her with seven points on the night.
On paper the game looked very close, as Kent State and Northern Illinois shot 40.9% and 48.1% from the field, respectively. The Huskies were able to sink two threes and eleven from the foul line whereas the Golden Flashes were not able to connect from beyond the arc and made seven of their 15 foul shots. On the boards, Northern Illinois held a slight edge, 31-28.
Kent State returns home to the M.A.C. Center as they host Ball State on Sunday (Feb. 2) at 7:00pm. Tickets are available online at kentstatesports.com or by calling the ticket office at 330-672-2244.
