FISHERS, Ind. – In 15 years of women's golf in the Mid-American Conference, only one team has ever taken the title. Kent State will vie for its 16th-straight conference championship this weekend at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club in Fishers, Indiana, April 25-27.
Josée Doyon, Natalie Goodson, Jennifer Ha, Erin Hawe and Wad Phaewchimplee will compete for the Golden Flashes in the event. Ha enters as the reigning MAC Women's Golfer of the Year. She won last year's tournament by three strokes while the team won by 28 strokes. Ha is currently ranked 79th in the nation by Golfweek/Sagarin. She was the second women's NCAA championship individual qualifier in Kent State history a year ago.
Doyon finished last year's MAC championship event in third place while Hawe had a sixth place finish. The Golden Flashes hold six of the top ten scoring averages in the MAC heading into championship weekend.
The MAC Championships were also played at Hawthorns in 2012 and 2010. Kent State won by 19 strokes in 2010 and by 16 strokes in 2012.
Kent State posted the lowest winning score of the championships in 2001 after shooting an 887. The team's biggest margin of victory was a remarkable 66 strokes in 2002. No other MAC team has been closer than 12-strokes of the lead after the final day.
The teams will play 18 holes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. With the highest Golfstat ranking, No. 39 Kent State will tee off in the last wave from 9:40-10:20 on Friday. They will be paired with No. 88 Toledo and No. 131 Ball State for the opening round.
Live scoring will be available for the whole tournament at BirdieFire.com. Fans can also follow @KentStWGolf on Twitter for updates throughout the weekend.
