ATHENS, Ohio – Kent State (18-10, 6-2 MAC) took a share of the Mid-American Conference East Division lead after sweeping a doubleheader at Ohio (5-22, 1-7 MAC) on Saturday (Apr. 5). They took the first game 11-1 before winning the second 5-3.
The Golden Flashes wasted no time grabbing an early lead, scoring in the first inning for the fifth straight game. The first game began with back-to-back base hits by Jon Wilson and Alex Miklos before Justin Wagler advanced them on a sacrifice bunt. Zarley Zalewski picked up two RBI in the next at-bat on a base hit.
After Ohio was able to plate a run in the next inning, Cody Koch gave Kent State a two-run lead again after a solo shot over the left field wall, making it a 3-1 game.
A leadoff walk to Zalewski in the 6th allowed him to come home later in the inning on a groundout by Sawyer Polen to score the Flashes' fourth run.
Kent State put the game away in the 7th inning as they plated seven runs, starting with two on a Zalewski double down the right field line and another two in the next at-bat on a line drive up the middle by Koch.
Polen joined in with two more RBI on a double and then was able to advance to third, making it easy for him to sore on a passed ball, making it an 11-1 game.
Eric Lauer went six innings in the start with four hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts to earn his seventh win of the season. John Fasola followed him with three shutout innings to earn the save. He allowed just two hits while striking out three.
Koch finished 3-for-5 with the bomb and three RBI. Wilson and Zalewski both had two hits. Zalewski led the team with four RBI while Polen batted in three runners.
In game two, the Golden Flashes got on top early again with a run in the 2nd on an error and sacrifice fly off the bat of Polen.
In the 4th with two runners on, T.J. Sutton skied a ball to right field that the defenseman never saw. The ball landed past him for a two-RBI triple for Sutton. He then came home on a groundout by Polen, making it a 4-0 game.
In the 5th, they tacked another on after Miklos hit a leadoff double and came home on a Zalewski single.
Ohio was able to get on the board in game two with two runs in the 7th, then they rallied and made things interesting in the bottom of the 9th. After a triple and a RBI single to make it a 5-3 game, the Bobcats had runners on second and third with one out after an error. Eric Dorsch silenced the threat by getting a soft liner back to the mound and then by striking out the final batter of the game to get his fifth save this season.
Nick Jensen-Clagg went 6.2 innings in the start with four hits, two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts. Josh Pierce followed him in relief with three hits, no runs and one strikeout in one inning of relief.
Sutton was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game with a triple and two RBI. Zalewski stayed hot with a 3-for-5 performance while Wilson and Miklos both collected two hits in game two.
The two wins make it ten-straight for Kent State at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens, dating back to the 2009 season.
The Golden Flashes will go for the sweep on Sunday (Apr. 6) in a 1:00pm game. Listen live on Golden Flashes iHeart Radio or follow along on Twitter at @KentStBaseball.
