Phaewchimplee Wins NCAA Regional While Team Falls Stroke Short of Advancing

STILLWATER, Okla. – Wad Phaewchimplee became the second Golden Flash in history to win a NCAA Regional, finishing the event 7-under to top some of the best golfers in the country. Her total score of 209 ties the second-best 54-hole tournament score all-time at Kent State. She is the third Golden Flash to ever qualify for the NCAA Championships as an individual, following the footsteps of teammate Jennifer Ha who did so a year ago.
"Wad played flawless golf," Head Coach Greg Robertson said of his freshman that joined the team in January. "She's proven that she's going to be something special here in the future."
Kent State as a team fell a stroke short of moving on to nationals, finishing in 10th place, 39-over par. No. 1 seed UCLA won the regional by shooting 11-over through the three rounds. The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month.
"It was obviously disappointing to miss it by a shot," Robertson said, "but they prepared hard and they did a lot of good things leading up to the tournament and through the tournament. They don't have anything to be ashamed of."
The Golden Flashes finish the 2013-14 season with a 298.6 scoring average, the lowest in the history of the program.
Phaewchimplee shot one-under on the final day to seal her victory. She will now compete at the NCAA Championships May 20-23 at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Jennifer Ha finished the event 11-over. Natalie Goodson was close behind, shooting 12-over. Josée Doyon ended at 30-over while lone senior Erin Hawe wrapped up her Kent State career with a 32-over performance.
"I couldn't be more proud of this team and what they've done this year," Robertson said. "They did all the right things and worked hard on the golf course, in the weight room and in the classroom. I don't have any doubt that they'll all have a great summer of competitive golf and come back stronger next year."
