
Golden Flashes Travel to St. Bonaventure on Sunday

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team travels to St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Aug. 24, for a 1 p.m. game at Parkway Field at Bradford High School (PA). The Golden Flashes are coming off a season-opening 3-0 victory over Western Illinois, while the Bonnies dropped their first game of the season to Buffalo, 1-0. On Friday afternoon, the Golden Flashes built a 2-0 lead by halftime against the Leathernecks after goals by sophomore Abbie Lawson and rookie Hayden Pascoe. After just six minutes into the second half, Kent State increased its lead to 3-0 after a goal by freshman Kristen Brots. Kent State led 20-12 in shots against Western Illinois, but was edged 5-3 in corner kicks.
St. Bonaventure opened its season on Friday evening and suffered a 1-0 loss to Mid-American Conference foe, Buffalo. Buffalo found the back of the net at the 69:35 mark to give Christina Sarokon her first loss of the young season. The junior goalkeeper from North Tonawanda, N.Y. picked up eight saves in her 90 minutes.
The Bonnies finished the 2013 season 8-10-1 overall with a 4-4 mark in the Atlantic 10. St. Bonaventure opened the year with a 3-2 loss to Kent State at Zoeller Field. Kent State's Madison Helterbran opened the scoring just 14:46 into the game, and Jenna Hellstrom added the next two goals.
Sunday will be the sixth time the Bonnies and Golden Flashes will meet. Kent State leads the all-time series, 5-0-0, with four of its five wins coming on Zoeller Field.
St. Bonaventure lost leading scorer Alyssa Lapp, who added 18 points last season (8g, 2a). However, returning to the field is Molly Curry, who pitched in with 16 points on eight goals, and Brittany Charles who led the team with 10 assists.
Sarokon saw action in just 10 games in goal, and earned a 3-3-0 record. In her 630:00 minutes played, she earned a 1.71 goals against average and tallied 31 saves (.721).
After the Bonnies, Kent State will travel west to compete in a tournament hosted at UNLV. Kent State will challenge St. Francis at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, and will then take on the University of Colorado at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31.
