Soccer Hosts Oakland & Eastern Kentucky This Weekend

KENT, Ohio – After three weeks of being on the road, the Kent State women's soccer team (4-2-0) will be back on Zoeller Field when it hosts both Oakland University (1-7-0) and Eastern Kentucky (2-5-0) this weekend. The Golden Flashes will challenge the Golden Grizzlies at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, followed by a 1 p.m. game vs. the Colonials on Sunday, Sept. 21. Live stats will be available for both games. Fans are asked to bring canned goods to help Kent State's fall Food Fight. Donations will benefit the Center of Hope, the Kent State Food Pantry and Kent Social Services.
LAST TIME OUT
The Kent State Golden Flashes are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss at Louisville last Sunday afternoon. Kent State led 2-0 at halftime, but the Cardinals came back to even the score and eventually win in the first overtime period. Freshman Doni Capehart (Orient, Ohio) tallied her first Kent State goal just 7:09 into the game, and senior forward Stephanie Haugh (Richmond Hill, Ontario) recorded her first of the season.
ABOUT KENT STATE
Rookie Karli Paracca (Valencia, Pa.) currently leads Kent State in scoring with four points on two goals, while six other Golden Flashes have tallied one goal apiece to help the offense. Sophomore forward Jenna Hellstrom (Sudbury, Ontario) and senior forward Calli Rinicella (Solon, Ohio) have both dished out a team-high two assists.
Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Senn has started all games in goal for Kent State, and has allowed four goals (.66 gaa) in 547:19. She has earned four shutouts and has 33 saves (.892) to help the Flashes to a 4-2-0 record.
SCOUTING OAKLAND
After a 4-0 victory against Saginaw Valley State on Aug. 28, Oakland University has lost its last five straight games. Most recently, the Golden Grizzlies suffered a 1-0 loss at Colorado College, followed by a 5-1 deficit at Air Force.
Oakland, a squad that went 10-9-2 last year with a fourth place finish in the Horizon League with a 4-3 record, returned eight starters from the lineup. Senior forward Kyla Kellerman, who combined for 20 points on eight goals and four assists in 2013, currently leads Oakland with four points on two goals. Also, Alice Palmer and Kendra Prince each have three points on one goal and one assist.
Alison Holland has a 1-4-0 record in goal and has started in 5 games for the Golden Grizzlies. She has allowed six goals and has 23 saves. Stephanie Bukovec has started in three games and has allowed 11 goals for an 0-3-0 record.
SCOUTING EASTERN KENTUCKY
After winning its first two games of the season against Western Carolina and Alabama A&M, Eastern Kentucky has lost the next five straight games for a 2-5 overall record. Last weekend, the Colonels fell 2-1 to University of North Carolina-Asheville, followed by a 3-1 loss to Marshall. Eastern Kentucky will travel to Cleveland State on Friday evening, before arriving in Kent on Sunday.
Emmi Carroll leads the Colonels in scoring with five points on two goals and an assist, followed by Cassie Smith with four goals. Anna Hall has played 563:05 in the net, allowing 13 goals (2.08 gaa) and has 39 saves (.750) for a 2-5-0 record.
Eastern Kentucky is being outscored 17-10 by its opponents, and outshot 115-84. Last season, the Colonels finished the year 5-12-2 with a 4-5-1 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference.
THE SERIES
Kent State and Oakland will meet for just the third time, as Kent State leads the all-time series 1-0-1. The first meeting in 2005 ended in a 1-1 draw, while last season the Golden Flashes were victorious 1-0. The Golden Flashes will meet the Colonels for the third time, and leads the all-time series, 2-0-0. Kent State captured a 1-0 victory in 2008, and earned a 2-1 win in 2009.
