YPSILANTI, Mich. – No. 11 Kent State saw its season come to a close Monday night in the first round of Mid-American Conference action as No. 6 Eastern Michigan came back to take the game by a score of 70-52.
The Golden Flashes scored off the opening tip and held an 8-7 lead at the first media break of the game. After quite a bit of time until the next dead ball media break, the Eagles were able to take over the lead and were up 17-15 at the 9:46 mark in the first.
A jumper by Melanee Stubbs two and a half minutes later tied the game at 19 before she sunk another to give the lead back to the Flashes, 21-19. Jordan Korinek then made it an 8-0 run with a jump shot herself as Kent State went up by four with 4:56 to play in the half.
The lead would switch hands once again as Eastern Michigan regained it before Larissa Lurken drained a three from the top of the key to grab the one-point lead back. That lead would carry the team into halftime as it was a 28-27 game at the break.
The teams traded baskets immediately out of the half until the Eagles got ahead on a three-point shot to lead by four. That four-point lead grew to 12 after a 10-0 run forced the Golden Flashes to call a timeout with 13:16 on the clock in the second.
Kent State did go on a 6-0 run of its own to bring the deficit back down but Eastern Michigan would surge on ahead to eventually land at the 70-52 victory to advance.
Both teams shot around the 40% mark in the game while the Golden Flashes outrebounded 39-37. The Eagles had good ball control as they turned the ball over just six times in the contest while forcing 17 with eight steals on the other end. 19 of Eastern Michigan's points came off turnovers.
CiCi Shannon had a double-double in her final collegiate game with 12 points and ten rebounds. She also added in two blocks to end her Kent State career with 137, the 3rd most all-time. Stubbs also reached double-digits in her final game with ten points. Senior Mikell Chinn distributed the ball well with seven assists.
The Golden Flashes will end the 2014-15 season with a 5-25 overall record while going 3-15 in conference play.
