AKRON, Ohio – Emma Johnson's dominant 15-strikeout performance was not enough in Kent State's 1-0 loss to Central Michigan Thursday afternoon in a second round matchup of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Softball Championship at Firestone Stadium.
"Emma pitched extremely well except for the back-to-back hits and wild pitch that led to the run," said head coach Karen Linder. "I felt that we would get to their pitcher. We were able to hit her at their place, but she did an excellent job of shutting us down. "
Kent State (40-12) was unable to come through with timely hitting after putting runners on the corners to start the bottom of the seventh inning. Shelbi Tilton looked to jump-start a rally with a leadoff double. Arika Roush followed with a single through the left side to move pinch runner Chloe Kesterson over to third base. However, the next two batters could not put the ball in play and were retired via strikeout before a pop-up to third base ended the game.
Central Michigan was held to only three hits in the game, but two of them came back-to-back to score the only run of the game in the top of the second inning. Sara Hansen singled and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Maison Kalina then brought Hansen in to score with a double.
The Flashes had more hits in the game with four, but left seven runners on base. Dani Ramos reached twice after being hit with a pitch and had a stolen base.
Johnson (22-6) suffered her first loss since April 10 and the third straight loss in which she only allowed one earned run.
Top-seeded Kent State an elimination game on Friday at 1 p.m. against the winner of Thursday evening's game between No. 6 Northern Illinois and No. 7 Akron.
