KENT, Ohio- Kent State and Louisville played to a 2-2 draw in women's soccer on Friday night at Zoeller Field. Neither team could come up with the game-winner in the hard fought double-overtime contest. With the tie Kent State improved to 1-1-1 and remained unbeaten at home, while Louisville improved to 1-1-1 for the season.
The Golden Flashes battled back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 but could not come up with the game winner. Following a 34th minute Louisville goal from Casey Whitfield, sophomore Kristen Brots answered quickly with an equalizer in the 37th minute. Brots picked up a loose ball in the middle of the 18-yard box and drove a shot past Louisville goalkeeper Paige Brown for her second goal of the season.
The two teams went into the intermission tied 1-1 following what was a closely contested first half. Kent State had the only corner kick of the fist half but the Cardinals enjoyed a 6-4 advantage in shots. In the second-half Louisville came out of the gates quickly and went ahead 2-1 at the 48:02 mark with a goal by Victoria Martinis.
Kent State junior Jenna Hellstrom came up with a crucial goal in the 65th minute to even the score at 2-2. Sophomore Veronica Bosco flicked a pass by a Louisville defender for Hellstrom, who put the ball in the back of the net. The goal was the third of the season for Hellstrom, who is the current leading scorer for the Golden Flashes.
Kent State put in a good defensive effort throughout the game as the Cardinals battered Golden Flashes goalie Katie Kingsbury with 22 shots. Kingsbury finished with seven saves on the night.
Neither team had a great scoring chance the rest of the way in regulation and quality chances were sparse in the two overtime periods. Louisville earned a corner kick a minute into the first overtime and had a shot off of a rebound from the corner kick go wide.
Kent State's best chance for a winner came in the second overtime when Doni Capehart had a header go over the crossbar halfway through the final overtime. The Golden Flashes had to survive one final scare in the closing seconds as Louisville was granted a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box at the enplane on the left side of goal. Louisville brought everyone forward as the free kick was granted with 25 seconds remaining.
The Kent State defense was able to clear the kick out of the box and time expired.
The Golden Flashes next play on Friday, September 4th at 4 p.m. when they travel to play Vermont.
