KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Kent State posted the best score of the day by five strokes to take the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships as Taylor Kim won the first event of her career in a playoff on Tuesday.
The Golden Flashes finished at 5-under overall in the tournament after a final day score of 284. They beat second-place team and host Tennessee by nine strokes in the three rounds.
"They were steady all week and really didn't make too many mistakes," said Head Coach Greg Robertson. "All week we talked about finishing and they went out and did it and showed a lot of energy."
Kim shot an even par-71 round to finish at 6-under in a tie for first. After shooting par on the opening playoff hole, she birdied the next to take the tournament title for herself.
"I was really happy with my play all week," said Kim. "I've been working hard with my coaches back in Kent and I'm glad it paid off."
Three other Kent State players ended in the top ten for an overall dominant performance from the team. Josée Doyon shot 1-under in the final round to take 4th place at 2-under. Amira Alexander shot 1-under and Wad Phaewchimplee 2-over on Tuesday as they both finished in a tie for 9th at 3-over.
Michaela Finn shot 9-over to finish tied for 31st. Playing as an individual, Kelly Nielsen came in at 21-over to end in a tie for 69th place.
The Golden Flashes had the best scoring versus par on all holes and led the field with 190 pars, 12 more than the next best team. Phaewchimplee was second in par three scoring, coming in at even. Kim and Doyon finished second in par four scoring at 2-under. Kim also tied for second in par five scoring at 5-under. Both Phaewchimplee and Alexander ended with the most pars with 43.
The team has a break from competition before heading to Boerne, Texas, to compete in the Jim West Challenge October 4-6.
