Kent State Takes Two to Share Golden Flashes Classic Title

KENT, Ohio โ Kent State volleyball bounced back form a disappointing five-set loss in Friday's home opener with a spirited effort to win both its matches on Saturday. The Golden Flashes (4-3) outlasted Albany in five sets (25-16, 32-34, 27-25, 15-25, 17-15) and then defeated Oakland, 3-1 (17-25, 31-29, 25-16, 25-21) to finish with a 2-1 record and share of the team championship of the Golden Flashes Classic.
Senior Kelly Hutchison was outstanding throughout the tournament and earned MVP honors. Hutchison averaged 4.93 kills per set on a .308 hitting percentage in addition to 26 digs, 10 blocks and two double-doubles. Sophomore Challen Geraghty was named Top Libero of the tournament for her stellar play in the back row. Geraghty recorded 6.21 digs per set and had at least 25 in all three matches. Sophomore Kelsey Bittinger was also named to the all-tournament team after posting 4.00 kills per set and 4.67 digs per set.
"It was an outstanding match for us tonight in a lot of ways," said head coach Don Gromala. "We didn't come out the strongest, but we talk about getting better throughout matches, and we definitely did that this evening. We knew these would be tough opponents for us and we took care of business and got the job done."
