
Super Sunday Gives Flashes Fourth Place Finish at Boilermaker Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Kent State improved with each round at the Boilermaker Invitational and recorded the best third round (8-under) among the field of 15 Sunday at Kampen Golf Course. The Golden Flashes finished in fourth place overall and its Sunday performance was 11 strokes better than No. 2 Illinois, who won the team title.
Sophomores Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) and Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) and freshman Gisli Sveinbergsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) all shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday. Junior Josh Whalen (Napanee, Ontario) and freshman Bjarki Petursson (Borgarnes, Iceland) each fired a 1-over 73.
After moving up four spots in the standings from round one to round two, the Flashes moved up two more spots Sunday and created separation from the teams behind them. Kent State finished seven strokes ahead of No. 43 Michigan State and 17 strokes ahead of No. 47 Louisville, who finished fifth and sixth respectively.
Putting together a very consistent weekend, Holt finished in fourth place with a 4-under 212. He had just one bogey on Sunday to go with four birdies. Holt was five shots off the lead and and two shots out of second place.
Sveinbersson went 1-under for the tournament and 7-under over his final two rounds, helping him tie for a 10th place finish. He strung together six birdies Sunday. Sveinbersson's final 36 holes tied medalist Charlie Danielson (Illinois) for the best performances over rounds two and three.
Johnson saved his best round for Sunday to finish in a tie for 18th place with a 1-over 217. Like Holt, he birdied four holes with only one bogey in round three.
Whalen and Petursson each tied for 45th place with an 8-over 224.
The Golden Flashes will take their momentum into the Mid-American Conference Championships April 28-30, at Highland Meadows in Sylvania, Ohio.
