FOOT'S BAY, Ontario – The Kent State Herb Page Men's Golf team opened the 2026-27 season tying for 12th place out of 13 teams in the Canadian Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
The tournament north of the border featured a stacked lineup of five power conference opponents, as well as several quality mid-major programs. Christoffer Leuenhagen led the way for the Golden Flashes with a +4 final score through the three rounds of the tournament. The sophomore from Denmark had seven birdies in his final two rounds combined, shooting par in each round. Leuenhagen's score was marked as an individual.
Liam Curtis also had a strong performance for the Kent State lineup, finishing within the top-20 golfers and shooting an even par through the first two rounds. Curtis also got an eagle on the 327-yard 10th hole in the first round. Jiu-You Lin got the team's other eagle, in the massive 534-yard fourth hole in the first round.
The Mountain West's New Mexico Lobos ran away with the tournament team victory after back-to-back rounds below par as they finished with a -5. The Lobos' Johnnie Clark won the tournament with a -6 final score. Meanwhile, Wyatt Provence (T-4th, -3) and Thayer Plewe (T-9th, +2) also finished in the tournament's top-10 for New Mexico. Notre Dame slotted in comfortably in second place, 10 strokes behind UNM, but still seven strokes ahead of third place Santa Clara.
Power conference teams - Mississippi State, Rutgers, Missouri and Penn State - made up the majority of the middle of the final standings. Meanwhile, Cal Poly, Northern Illinois, Kent State and Abilene Christian battled back and forth with each other for four of the final five spots of the scoreboard. Former MAC foe, Northern Illinois, barely surpassed Kent State by one stroke as the Golden Flashes finished tied with Abilene Christian with a +61 final score.
