BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Coming off a 14-0 no-hitter, Kent State (39-11, 20-4) kept on its torrent pace, beating Bowling Green (16-35, 6-15) 10-1 and 8-2 for a Sunday double header and series sweep.
GAME ONE: Kent State 10, Bowling Green 1
Starter Andy Ravel kept the Falcons off the scoreboard for the first six innings and the pitching staff did not have an earned run in the contest for the victory.
The Flashes' bats wasted no time, as Luke Burch led off the game with a single, was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Mason Mamarella and Burch then scored on a skud single by Zarley Zalewski.
The team then added on three runs in both the 4th and 6th innings to break the game wide open. The 4th started with a Zalewski single, Conner Simonetti single and Tim DalPorto two-RBI double to right center. Dom Iero then singled to score DalPorto.
In the 6th, Pete Schuler walked, Iero singled and Josh Hollander had a RBI single to score the 5th run of the game. Burch followed with another RBI base hit before Zalewski walked with bases loaded for an easy RBI.
Another Kent State run scored in the 7th when Simonetti reached on an error and eventually came home on a hit by Iero. The scoring was rounded out by a two-run 9th. Brad Hamilton led things off with a pinch-hit triple before scoring when DalPorto belted another double. DalPorto scored later on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Neuschaefer.
Ravel earned the win as he went 7.0 innings with no earned runs, five hits, three walks and seven strikeouts. John Schreiber followed 1.1 innings of work with two hits and two strikeouts. Chris Martin got the final two outs of the game.
Burch and Iero both finished with three hits while Zalewski, DalPorto and Hollander each had two to contribute to the team's 15.
GAME TWO: Kent State 8, Bowling Green 2
Back-to-back doubles by Burch and Mamarella got the second game of the day underway and the Flashes quickly back up on the scoreboard. Simonetti then blasted a no-doubt shot out to right field to make it 3-0 before the Falcons had a chance to come to the plate.
Three more runs came home in the 5th as Burch smacked the first homerun of his career to keep his big day going. After Zalewski reached on an error, Simonetti slapped his second homerun of the day to make the score 6-0.
Bowling Green finally was able to score the first run of the weekend that was earned when they hit a solo shot in the 5th. The Falcons followed with one more in the 7th on a walk, single and wild pitch.
But, the Golden Flashes pushed their advantages back up to six-runs as they closed out the day with a two-run 9th. Hollander led off with a single and came home on a Zalewski double. Zalewski scored later on an error.
Eli Kraus improved to 9-1 on the season as he went 6.0 innings with six hits, one run, no walks and six strikeouts. Zach Spangler followed, allowing one hit, one run and one walk. Tim Faix was strong in 1.2 innings, giving up one walk while striking out three. Zach Willeman finished the final inning.
