COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two late goals were not enough for Kent State (6-5) as it fell 3-2 at Ohio State (4-7) on Friday.
After the teams waited an hour for storms to pass through the area, the Golden Flashes came out and put together a strong first half with nine shots and four corner opportunities, but could not connect for a tally. The lone mistake came 8:45 in when the Buckeyes scored on a breakaway to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second half Ohio State was able to get ahead 3-0 with goals at 47:08 and 52:40. Kent State finally broke through ten minutes later as they earned numerous consecutive corner opportunities. Silvia Figa Malgosa was in good position on a play to put the ball in the back of the net and make it a 3-1 game with seven minutes left on the clock.
With two and a half minutes remaining, Alison Harmatz dribbled in from the right side, slipping through two defenders and beating the keeper to put the Flashes down by just one goal.
The Golden Flashes worked quickly to maintain position for most of the finish, but could not find the shot to tie it as they went down 3-2.
Once again Kent State bettered its opponent statistically, leading in shots 17-10 and in corners 9-3 in the contest. Harmatz and Krysti Lober led the team with five shots each while Shannon Talbot finished with four.
Mid-American Conference play will resume on Sunday when the Golden Flashes host the Chippewas at noon.
