
Field Hockey Drops High Scoring Affair Against No. 4 Penn State

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University field hockey team (4-9-0) traded heavy blows with one of the nation's best teams, but fell late to No. 4 Penn State (10-2-0) at home, 5-3.
The Golden Flashes took the initial lead in the match, putting the top-5 ranked Nittany Lions on alert early. The first goal came from Alison Harmatz in the second minute. On the team's first attack, Harmatz drove the ball directly towards the goal. After taking advantage of an open path, Harmatz moved around the goalkeeper to score her third goal of the season.
Kent State continued to dictate the run of play early, and capitalized on a set play in the 24th minute. The Flashes scored directly off a penalty corner, set up directly from Clara Rodriguez Seto and Jessica Nesbitt. Ines Delpech took the strike, earning her team-best fourth goal.
Penn State made their move late in the first half, first scoring in the 28th minute off a corner. After earning the first assist, Moira Putsch scored the equalizer in the 30th minute. Tied at two goals a piece with a minute to go in the first half, Putsch scored her second straight goal to take a halftime lead.
The Flashes stayed aggressive in the second half, earning a crucial corner in the 47th minute. Rodriguez Seto inputted, took a pass in the circle from Jamie Fries, and tied the match at 3-3. It is her second goal of the season.
Penn State ultimately won the match on a pair of goals in the 54th and 59th minute. The first goal came on a corner, while Aurelia Meijer scored the final goal in the run of play. It would be the last shot of the match by Penn State.
Kent State fired off six shots in the final 10 minutes of the match, with four coming in the last four minutes. Penn State came up with back-to-back saves in the 67th minute, sealing the victory.
Overall, Kent State outshot the Nittany Lions 17-13, with eight shots on goal. Penn State had a slight edge in total corners, 7-6. Kylie LeBlanc played the entire match in goal, recording three saves.
Kent State returns to MAC play Oct. 6 at Ball State at 3 p.m.
