KENT, Ohio – The No. 15 Kent State University women's golf team will travel south for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico from Feb. 12-14.
The Golden Flashes are headed to Puerto Rico for the 15th straight year, having played in the tournament every year since its inception. The Lady Puerto Rico Classic will be played in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico for the ninth straight year, moving there from San Juan in 2009, and will be hosted by the Rio Mar Country Club's River Course for the seventh straight year, after moving from the Trump International Championship Course in 2011. PGA legend Greg Norman designed the Rio Mar Country Club River Course along the Mameyes.
Kent State is coming off a tournament with a competitive field, but will see the competition step up this week. Rio Mar will welcome six top-25 teams and an entire field made up of top-100 teams. Facing the Flashes are: No. 5 Georgia, No. 8 Furman, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 12 Purdue, No. 21 Baylor, NC State, TCU, Michigan, Texas Tech, Iowa State, Augusta, Vanderbilt, Maryland and LSU.
The Flashes are coming off their first tournament of the season at the UFC Challenge in Orlando. There, Kent State finished sixth overall, hitting a rough start but improving to stay competitive by tournament's end. Freshman Pimnipa Panthong finished 12th after shooting up the standings with a 68 in the third round. Senior Wad Phaewchimplee paced the team for most of the tournament with steady play, shooting three straight rounds under par to finish 15th.
Kent State will be up against one of the best regular season fields in the country this season. They will look to make an impact nationally, before playing only a pair of tournaments over the next six weeks.
