KENNESAW, Ga. – The No. 13 Kent State women's golf team won its second straight tournament, taking the title at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate at the Pinetree Country Club with a score of 12-over par 876.
The Flashes pulled out a narrow win in taking down four top-50 nationally ranked teams. Kent State finished one stroke ahead of No. 24 Purdue and two ahead of 35th ranked Texas Tech. The rest of the field finished nine strokes back or farther.
Individually, Kent State freshman Pimnipa Panthong was named the tournament co-champion alongside Purdue's August Kim. Panthong, currently ranked 11th in the nation, earned the trophy with a score of 3-under par 213. She was one of five players in the field to finish under par. She mirrored her second round score Tuesday with a 73 to end the tournament.
Panthong earns her second career tournament title and first since her collegiate debut back in September. She has finished in the top-20 in every tournament and claimed top-5 finishes in six of nine outings.
"We were very proud of the way they played hard until the end to come out with the win by one shot," said head coach Greg Robertson. "Pim played solid throughout the tournament, and it was great to see her win for the second time this year. We'll be working hard when we return to get prepared for Ohio State, and then postseason play after that."
Also in the top-10 was senior Wad Phaewchimplee, who finished tied for eighth at 2-over par. Phaewchimplee shot a 76 on Tuesday, including a birdie on 18 to secure her third straight top-10 finish.
All four scorers finished in the top-25, with Karoline Stormo and Michaela Finn each ending in a tie for 23rd at 7-over par 223. Finn had her best round of the tournament at an even par 72 Tuesday, while Stormo logged a 74 for the second straight round. Marissa Kirkwood rounded out the lineup in 79th at 24-over par at 240. She carded an 84 in round three.
Competing as an individual, Kelly Nielsen finished fifth among the Flashes and tied for 44th. She had her best round of the tournament at 74 Tuesday, putting her final score at 12-over par 228.
The Flashes will play one more regular season tournament before hosting the MAC Championships, competing in the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio April 15-16.
