Bats Go Quiet Against Wake Forest on Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Kent State (7-3) bats struggled on Saturday in a doubleheader at Wake Forest (8-4) as the Deacs were able to take both games, 7-2 and 5-0.
Game One • Wake Forest 7, Kent State 2
The Golden Flashes started the scoring in game one but were held to just three hits in the loss.
In the 3rd, Josh Hollander reached on an error and advanced on a wild pitch to put a runner in scoring position. He moved to third on a Reilly Hawkins single then scored on a fielder's choice by Mason Mamarella.
The Deacs answered in the bottom of the inning on two singles and a double. They went on to score two in the 4th, one in the 5th and two more in the 7th to put the game away. Their final run came in the 8th on a double and muffed throw.
Kent State's other run came in the 7th when Brad Hamilton singled, Zach Schultz walked and Josh Hollander was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hamilton scored on a Hawkins' fielder choice before a double play ended the threat.
Eli Kraus went 5.0 innings in the start and gave up ten hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out five. Chris Martin followed with an innings work, letting in two runs while walking two and striking out two. Aaron Tadian threw 1.1 innings with one hit, one run and one strikeout. John Matthews finished the game on the mound with a walk and strikeout in the final two outs.
Hawkins, Hamilton and Luke Burch were the only Flashes with hits in the game.
Game Two • Wake Forest 5, Kent State 0
The Deacs came out strong in the second game, scoring all five runs in the first three innings for the win. Two singles and a double in the first scored two. A walk, two wild pitches and a double made it a 4-0 game in the 2nd. The final run in the 3rd came by way of a single, double and another wild pitch.
Kent State was held to just three hits in the game again, as Burch, Hamilton and Matthews all had one.
Zach Willeman went 5.0 innings in the start with eight hits, five runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Robert Zeigler followed for 2.2 innings with two hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Schultz got the final out of the day via a strikeout.
The Golden Flashes will finish the weekend series with a 10 a.m. game against Quinnipiac on Sunday.
