KENT, Ohio - The Kent State soccer team will hit the road to Western New York for the second weekend of non-conference action to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday at the Marra Athletics Complex in Olean, N.Y.
Last Time Out
The Mid-American Conference East Division preseason favorite Golden Flashes fell to 0-2 last weekend in the first weekend of regular season action. Kent State lost 2-1 on the road at Purdue, and by the same score, at home to Cleveland State. It is the first time Kent State dropped its first two matches since 2007.
Both of Kent State's goals this season have come in the first period. Last Friday against Purdue, senior Mackenzie Lesnick served a corner kick in a perfect location in front of the goal, and it bounced off a Boilermaker and into the net. Against Cleveland State, freshman Vital Kats made a quick move in the right side of the box and found the back of the net for her first career goal.
The Flashes used a pair of goalkeepers on the weekend. Junior Ashleah McDonald played in both matches and allowed four goals while making six saves. Senior Katie Kingsbury played the second half against Cleveland State, and shutout the Vikings with one save while facing three shots.
Kent State led its opponents in shots 24-23 and corner kicks 13-7. Vital Kats leads the team with five shots, and Donavan Capehart follows with four.
Scouting St. Bonaventure
The Bonnies opened their season by dropping their first two matches, 2-1 at home to Binghamton, and 1-0 on the road at Youngstown State. Marley Jarvis scored their lone goal of the season in the opener against Binghamton. Goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm allowed three goals while making 15 saves. St. Bonaventure was picked to finished 14th in the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Preseason Poll by the league's 14 head coaches. Last year the Bonnies went 4-14-1 with a 1-9 mark in Atlantic 10 action.
St. Bonaventure has one match before hosting Kent State, as they travel to Little Three rival Niagara on Friday at 7 p.m. Head coach Steve Brdarski is in his fifth season leading the program.
Series History
Kent State has played St. Bonaventure six times in program history and holds a 5-1 record. The Golden Flashes won the first five matches of the series, before falling 1-0 in the last matchup in 2014 at a neutral site at Bradford, Pa. The first two matches in 2000 and 2006 went to double-overtime with the Flashes coming out victorious, 1-0 and 4-3, respectively. Kent State is 8-3 when facing teams from the Atlantic 10.
Up Next
The Flashes continue their road swing next weekend when they travel to Fort Myers, Fla. to take on two NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago as part of the FGCU Tournament. Kent State will play host Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. and Florida Atlantic on Sunday Sept. 3 at 10:30 a.m.
