KENT, Ohio. – Senior libero Challen Geraghty achieved the 2,000-dig milestone as Kent State (1-6) lost the opening match of the Golden Flashes Classic to Butler, 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 14-25) Friday evening at the M.A.C. Center.
Geraghty, who needed just seven digs at the start of the match to reach the milestone, recorded the historic dig late in the first set and finished with a match-high 20 digs. She joins Laura Jensen as the only Golden Flashes among the 14 players in Mid-American Conference history to reach the 2,000-dig mark. Jensen's 2,167 digs rank ninth in conference history.
"This is a great accomplishment for Challen," said head coach Don Gromala. "She had a great match and played really hard. We plan on trying to put our defense around her so she gets a lot of attempts, but teams are starting to know that and do some different things on the other end."
Kent State tallied 70 digs as a team, which is tied for 12th-most in the country for a three-set match this season, as three Flashes joined Geraghty in double-figures. Sophomore Claire Tulisiak provided a season-best 13 digs, senior Kelsey Bittinger posted 12 digs and freshman Kaeleigh Stang had a career-high 10 digs.
Bittinger led all players with 17 kills while hitting .325 for her second double-double of the season. Freshman Natalie Tagala started at setter and finished with 17 assists. Senior Brittney Jakscht saw action in two sets and contributed nine assists.
Kent State will play College of Charleston in the final match of the Golden Flashes Classic on Sunday at 12 p.m. The contest will be streamed on the ESPN3.
