BUFFALO, N.Y. – Kent State fell victim to Buffalo's fifth straight victory as the Bulls improved to 9-1 on the season Tuesday night at UB Stadium. The Golden Flashes closed out their run of five game against Mid-American Conference East Division opponents with a 48-14 setback to the Bulls.
On its Senior Night, Buffalo found running game success early and often.
"Buffalo came out and did a really good job of establishing the line of scrimmage," Head Coach Sean Lewis said. "We knew that they were solid on both the offensive and defensive line and wanted to establish the run game early and prevent us from running the ball. That is what led to their success tonight."
The Bulls scored on each of their first four possessions, including the second play from scrimmage. Jarrett Patterson went over the right side of the line and raced 64 yards for the opening touchdown.
Meanwhile, the Flashes had trouble getting any offensive momentum going until the fourth quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Dustin Crum led a 15-play, 67-yard drive in the final quarter and capped it off with a two-yard rushing touchdown. Crum threw for 43 yards and rushed for 28 on the drive.
On the Flashes' very next series, Crum connected with Mike Carrigan on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Crum rushed for 38 yards on the drive. It was Carrigan's fourth TD catch of the season. He finished the game with a career-high eight completions.
"I am really pleased with the effort of some of our kids and the way they finished and the way they continued to fight," Lewis said. "The fourth down stop at the end was really great. And with the offense able to move the ball late and get some points, I was really pleased with the way the kids fought and the character that they showed with that."
Junior linebacker Dalton Hicks led the Flashes with 10 tackles. In his three starts this season, Hicks has totaled 36 stops.
With Buffalo threatening on a second and goal in the second quarter, Cepeda Phillips made his second fumble recovery in four games. Phillips finished with nine tackles.
Senior Kalil Morris blocked an extra point, the Flashes first blocked PAT since Roosevelt Nix in 2013.
Freshman wide receiver Lon'kevious McFadden made his college debut in the second quarter and made his first catch in the third.
Sophomore safety Akeam Peters played for the first time since week two.
Kent State returns to action Thursday, Nov. 15, hosting Toledo at 6 p.m., on CBS Sports Network.
