Flashes Travel to Nation’s Capital for Spring Break Trip

The Kent State softball team (14-10, 2-1 MAC) hits the road for its spring break trip to Washington, D.C. and will take three opponents in mid-week contests. The Flashes will battle Mount St. Mary's (7-13, 0-0 NEC) on Tuesday, March 27 at 1 p.m. and take on UMBC (5-17, America East) at 3 p.m. The road swing will conclude on Wednesday, March 29 at Georgetown (7-22, 0-2 BIG EAST). Last Time Out
Kent State won its first Mid-American Conference series of the season last weekend, taking two of three games from Western Michigan. The Golden Flashes won game one 8-7 in extra innings. KSU erased a five-run deficit entering the sixth inning scoring four in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game and force extras. Kent State won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning on a ball that was dropped by the right fielder. In game two, Madi Huck dealt a complete game shutout in a 1-0 pitcher's duel win.
Maria Cegledy had a clutch weekend at the dish, hitting the game-tying single in the seventh inning with two strikes and two outs. Holly Speers only recorded two at bats, but clubbed one home run and walked nine times. She leads the country in batting average (.576), on base percentage (.698), and second in slugging percentage (1.085). Emily Dobbin also extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Series History / Scouting the Opponents
Mount St. Mary's – This will be the first ever meeting between the Golden Flashes and the Mountaineers. Mount St. Mary's is 7-13 this season, but has not played since March 15 due to inclement weather. The Mountaineers were picked to finish eighth in the Northeast Conference and open up league play next weekend against defending champion Saint Francis (Pa.). Junior Lindsay Heinze leads the squad with a .310 batting average, four home runs and 15 RBIs, and is a First Team All-NEC selection from last season. Â
UMBC – This will be the first ever meeting against the Retrievers. UMBC is 5-17 this season and begins America East conference play next weekend against UMass Lowell. Sophomore Valerie Hammett leads the team with a .393 batting average. The Retrievers enter the contest on a three-game winning streak, defeating Saint Peter's twice and Rider. UMBC was selected to finish sixth in the America East preseason coaches' poll.
Georgetown – Kent State is 1-0 all-time against the Hoyas, winning 8-0 in 2012. This season Georgetown is 7-22 and 0-2 in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas were swept by Providence, 4-1, and, 2-1, last weekend. Georgetown was selected to finished eighth in the BIG EAST preseason coaches' poll.

Kent State returns home for a weekend series against MAC West for Toledo at the Diamond at Dix. The series begins Friday, March 30 with a single game at 3 p.m. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m. with first pitch of game two following 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
