Three Golden Flashes Set for Competition at 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

Kent State's track and field program hopes to conclude the indoor season with a strong showing on the national stage, as three student-athletes are set to compete at this weekend's 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Texas A&M University's Gilliam Indoor Stadium in College Station, Texas will serve as the host venue for this weekend's championships (March 9-10).
Senior Gabrielle Figueroa will compete in the women's weight throw, redshirt sophomore TJ Lawson will compete in the men's heptathlon and junior Craig Stevens, Jr. will compete in the triple jump.
Lawson will be making his NCAA Indoor Championships debut after earning All-American honors in the decathlon at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Stow, Ohio native will compete in the heptathlon on both Friday and Saturday. Action on Friday begins with the 60-meter dash at 1 p.m. EST and also includes the long jump, shot put and high jump. Competition resumes at 1 p.m. EST on Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, which will be followed by the pole vault and finally the 1,000-meter run. Lawson is ranked No. 5 in the nation with a school-record 5,865 points in his only heptathlon competition of the season at the Golden Flash Gala on Dec. 8-9.
Figueora punched her ticket with a school-record throw of 69'-11.00" at the MAC Championships last Friday to repeat as conference champion in the event. She enters the competition ranked No. 15 in the country and will compete at 5:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.
Stevens, Jr. is schedule for action in the triple jump at 6 p.m. EST on Saturday. He enters the competition seeded 11th with a top jump of 53'-0.75" at the Kent State National Qualifier on Feb. 10. The junior captured his first triple jump title at the MAC Championships with a top mark of 52'-1.75" that was nearly three feet further than any other competitor.
