KSU drops first game of the year when leading after seven

KENT, OHIO – A 3-0 lead disappeared over the final three frames as Ohio stunned Kent State 5-3 in 12 innings on Saturday evening.

The frustrating loss cost Kent State a chance at a commanding three-game conference lead as NIU knocked off Miami again in DeKalb.

Coming into Saturday's game, Kent State was 21-0 when leading after seven. That streak – along with KSU's eight-game winning streak ended when Michael Klein pulled a double down the left field line in the top of the 12th. The Bobcats were gifted two runs in the seventh on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and then a bases loaded walk. OU tied it in the eighth on a similarly placed double.

Kent State struck first on a solo homer to left by Greg Lewandoski in the third. It became 2-0 when Tim DalPorto doubled in Mason Mamarella. The Flashes made it 3-0 when Reilly Hawkins singled home Pavin Parks.

Unfortunately, that was the extent of KSU's offensive success against Ohio pitching. Kent State had opportunities throughout the game, but could not deliver a game-breaking hit. The Flashes stranded 10 men in the game.

Connor Wollersheim and Zach Spangler pitched brilliantly for the Golden Flashes, with the former taking a shutout into the seventh and the latter escaping a 10^th-inning situation. Of the six batters Spangler faced, he retired them all – three via the strikeout.

The series will wrap up on Sunday at 1 p.m. when Eli Kraus takes the hill for KSU.
