KENT, Ohio — Kent State's Ines Delpech (fied hockey) and Jordan Korinek (women's basketball) were announced as nominees for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year award, the NCAA announced on Thursday (July 12).
Delpech and Korinek are among a record 581 female college athletes nominated by NCAA member schools for this year's award across all three NCAA divisions. They each received the Janet Bachna Award, which is presented to the Kent State senior female student-athlete who displays athletic, academic and leadership excellence. Both student-athletes graduated in May with a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA.
Established in 1991 and now in its 28th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
Delpech is Kent State's only field hockey student-athlete to be named both an NFHCA All-American (2016) and CoSIDA Academic All-American (2016, 2017). A three-time NFHCA All-West Region selection, four-time All-MAC selection and four-time MAC All-Tournament Team selection, she led the Golden Flashes to NCAA Tournament appearances and MAC regular season titles in each of her first three seasons (2014-16). As a freshman, Delpech scored the game-winner against Delaware to give Kent State the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history. She completed her career with 24 goals and 11 assists.
This past fall, Delpech earned NFHCA All-West Region Second Team, All-MAC First Team and Mid-American Conference All-Tournament Team honors while being selected to participate in the 2017 NFHCA Senior Game. The Tandil, Argentina native played nearly every minute for the Flashes and was the leader of a defense that ranked 18th nationally in shutouts per game. She was second on the team with six goals and 14 points.
Korinek is one of only three Kent State women's basketball student-athletes to be a multiple-time Academic All-America® selection, earning first team recognition in 2018 and second team recognition in 2017. A three-time All-MAC honoree and the only player in Golden Flashes history to score at least 1,000 points while shooting at least 50-percent from the field and at least 80-percent at the free throw line, Korinek made her mark throughout the Kent State record book. Her 1,786 points during her time in blue and gold ranks fifth on the all-time scoring list. She also ranks among the top-five in program history in field goals (652), field goal percentage (.504) and free throw percentage (.811), while ranking among the top-10 in scoring average (14.64), free throws made (445), free throws attempted (549), and rebounds (751).
During her senior season, Korinek was an All-MAC First Team selection after scoring 634 points, which ranks as the third-most in a season in program history. She ranked second in the Mid-American Conference with a scoring average of 19.8 points per game while pulling down a team-best 6.9 rebounds per game. Korinek was also named as one of 30 candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, which honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in community, classroom, character and competition.
Next, conferences will select up to two conference nominees each from the pool of school nominees. The Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will then choose the top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.
From the top 30, the selection committee determines the top three honorees from each division and announces the nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then chooses the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year from those nine.
