BOWLING GREEN, Ohio —Kent State had a chance to tie the game late after trailing by 13 in the fourth quarter but was unable to complete the comeback and fell to host Bowling Green, 73-69, in the Mid-American Conference women's basketball opener for both teams.
The Golden Flashes (5-7, 0-1 MAC) made their first five shots and led by as many as seven in the opening minutes before missing the next 10 attempts. Freshman Rylee Kalocay ended the shooting slump with a triple and BG led 20-18 at the end of the first quarter.
Following a 4-of-20 shooting performance in the second period, Kent State went into the locker room at halftime trailing 43-29.
The Flashes scored six quick points to open the third quarter and force timeout to be called by the Falcons. Kent State trimmed the deficit to seven with 4:10 left in the period but made just one of its final five shots and faced a 10-point deficit going into the final 10 minutes.
A three-pointer to start the fourth put BG ahead by 13, and the host led by 12 after another three-pointer with 6:53 to play. The Flashes then began a final push with an 8-0 run and got within three on a layup by junior Riley Rismiller with 2:52 remaining. After forcing a turnover to have a chance to tie the game for the first time since the first period, Kent State went three straight possessions without scoring. Jump shots by Kalocay and redshirt junior Corynne Hauser brought the Flashes to within three, but the defense was unable to follow with a stop either time.
Hauser finished with a team-high 17 points and was joined in double-figures by junior Mya Babbitt, who had 10. Rismiller grabbed 10 rebounds to go with eight points, helping the Flashes to a 43-41 rebounding advantage.
Kent State will return to action at home on Wednesday, Dec. 31 against Miami. Tip from the M.A.C. Center is scheduled for 12 p.m.
