CLEVELAND, Ohio – Freshman Khyla Porter scored two goals to lead Kent State (2-1-1) to a 2-0 victory over Cleveland State (2-2-0) on a sun splashed Sunday afternoon. Porter, who scored the first points of her collegiate career, scored both goals in the first period and the Golden Flashes defense was fantastic down the stretch to pitch their first shutout of the campaign.
Porter got the Kent State offense on the board in the 27th minute on a shot that snuck inside the post from roughly 10-yards out on an assist from sophomore Vital Kats. She wasn't done yet, as Porter scored again on a deep shot from well outside the box to beat the Vikings keeper in the 44th minute.
Porter became the second freshman Flash in back-to-back years to score two goals in the same game. Cameron Shedenhelm scored two goals in last season's road victory over St. Bonaventure.
Kent State's offense was relentless in the first period and pounded the Vikings defense with an 11-4 shot advantage. The Golden Flashes were able to play with a defensive lead in the second period and allowed just two shots on goal. Kent State has defeated Cleveland State in six of the last seven meetings.
Overall, Kent State led in shots (17-10) and shots on goal (6-5). Cleveland State held a slight advantage in corner kicks (5-3).
Redshirt freshman keeper Faith O'Neill (2-1-1) recorded the first shutout of her career and made five saves in the clean sheet performance. Vikings goalkeeper Stevie Holbrook (2-2-0) made four stops while facing 17 shots.
Kent State remains on the road next weekend to play at the UNCW Tournament against the host Seahawks on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. and close out the weekend on Sunday with an 11 a.m. bout against Fairleigh Dickinson.
