The Kent State soccer team (2-1-1) concludes its four-game road swing at the Courtyard by Marriott UNCW Soccer Invitational this weekend in North Carolina. The Flashes take on the host Seahawks (3-1-0) on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson (1-3-0) on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes began their four-game road trip with a pair of matches against Pitt and Cleveland State. The Golden Flashes earned a 1-1 draw against the Panthers on Friday night at Ambrose Field. The Panthers took an early lead scoring in the 15th minute, but the Flashes responded with a Maddie Holmes goal off an assist from Isabelle Mihail in the 52nd minute. Kent State's defense tightened up down the stretch and did not give the Panthers many chances the rest of the match. Goalkeeper Faith O'Neill kept the Flashes in the game making five saves.
Freshman Khyla Porter came out red hot in Kent State's Sunday tilt against Cleveland State. Porter scored both goals in the 2-0 victory, and recorder her first collegiate points in the process. Kent State's shined in the win as O'Neill had a strong performance in net. She recorded the first shutout of her career and the team's first shutout of the season.
Kent State Picked to win MAC Regular Season and Tournament
The Golden Flashes were selected to win the MAC regular season and tournament championship in the preseason coaches' poll. Kent State has been selected to win a regular season championship in three consecutive years after they were named to win the MAC East Division in 2016 and 2017.
Porter and O'Neill Sweep MAC Player of the Week Honors
Freshmen Khyla Porter were both tabbed as Mid-American Conference Player of the Week award winner for their performances last weekend. Porter tallied two goals at Cleveland State and O'Neill allowed one goal while making 11 saves and registered her first shutout in 200 minutes of action.
Scouting UNCW
The Seahawks have won three of their first four matches to open the season aginst VCU, High Point and UNCG. Redshirt Junior, Kirsten Bootes has been the backbone of the offensive attack with three goals, all coming in UNCW victories. Senior Caitie Broderick has started all four matches between the pipes and holds a 1.57 goals against average. The Seahawks were selected to finish 6th in the Colonial Athletic Association under first-year head coach Chris Neal.
Scouting Fairleigh Dickinson
The Knights opened their season with a bang, upending Marshall, 1-0. However, they have dropped their last three matches and were shutout twice by Providence and Lehigh. Fairleigh Dickinson has struggled offensively this year and have only scored two goals off the feet of freshman Christa Waterman and sophomore Sofia Albertsson. The Knights were picked to finish second in the Northeast Conference preseason coaches' poll and are led by fifth year head coach Eric Teepe.

Kent State has never faced UNCW or Fairleigh Dickinson on the pitch.
