No. 13 Women’s Golf Captures Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- The No. 13 Kent State University women's golf team won its second-straight tournament of the 2018-19 season on Tuesday with a five-stroke victory at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at the par-71, 5,897-yard long course at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
The win marks the second time the Flashes have won at the Mercedes-Benz in the 22 seasons the tournament has been played. Kent State previously took home the team title back in 2015.
Kent State (303-284-283/870) finished at 18-over par, five shots ahead of second-place Middle Tennessee (294-297-284/875), which came in at 23-over par. Charlotte (293-292-291/876) and Illinois (302-290-284/876) finished in a tie for third at 24-over par, while Tennessee (297-293-294/884) and UT- San Antonio (291-306-287/884) tied for fifth at 32-over par.
Senior Michaela Finn (79-69-70/214) was the Flashes' low finisher and claiming a top-10 spot for the second time of the season, finishing tied for fifth at 1-over par. Finn finished the day with a 1-under par 71 score and went 16 holes for par or better with three birdies.
Junior Pimnipa Panthong (77-71-69/217) tied for eighth at 4-over par. Panthong had the best third round score on the team and finished the day with a 2-under par 69 score. With back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16, Panthong totaled four in the third round after shooting 16 holes for par or less.
Sophomore Chloe Salort (72-76-73/221) tied for 18th at 8-over par. Salort fired a 2-over par third-round score and finished the round with 12-straight pars. Junior Karoline Stormo (79-72-72/223) tied for 28th at 10-over par and finished the final round with a 1-over par score, mirroring her second round.
Rounding out the Flashes' lineup was junior Marissa Kirkwood (80-72-72/224) who tied for 31st with an 11-over par score. Kirkwood fired a 1-over third-round score with three birdies on the day. Sophomore Kory Nielsen (75-76-74/226) competed as an individual and finished tied for 41st at 13-over par. Nielsen played her best round of golf in the final round and shot a 3-over par 74 score that completed the day after going 15 holed for par.
Kent State will return to action Oct. 8-9 at the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah in Medinah, Ill.
