WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite taking an early lead, the Kent State soccer team (2-3-1) fell to Fairleigh Dickinson (2-4-0), 2-1, on Sunday morning at the Courtyard by Marriott UNCW Soccer Invitational.
Sophomore Vital Kats scored the only Golden Flashes goal off a penalty kick in the 30th minute. Kats hit the bottom right corner of the goal for her first score of the season.
The Knights were quick to answer, and just 10 minutes later Viktorija Miseljic scored on a one timer off a cross from Elma Kolenovic. The match remained tied until the 81st minute when Elma Kolenovic found the back of the net on a shot from directly in front of the goal.
Kent State and Fairleigh Dickinson each totaled 11 shots and five corner kicks. The Flashes had a slight advantage in shots on goal (5-4) but allowed two to score. Kats and sophomore Isabelle Mihail led Kent State's offensive attack with three shots each.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Faith O'Neill allowed two goals and made two saves, while Fairleigh Dickinson's Amanda Fitzgerald made four saves and allowed one goal.
The Golden Flashes return home after a long four game road swing on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. when they host Morehead State as part of Senior Night festivities.
