Track and Field Sets Sights for Akron Dual

KENT, Ohio - The Kent State track and field program will square off against rival Akron in a dual meet on Friday, January 25. This will be the first of two consecutive weekend meets hosted at the University of Akron, and the meet will be televised on ESPN3.
Competition begins at 7:00 p.m. with the men's and women's pole vault in addition to men's and women's long jump, women's high jump, and women's weight throw. Running events are scheduled to commence at 7:08 p.m. with the men's mile.
Kent State has competed in one meet so far during the indoor season, the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. Sophomore Grace Tennant was victorious in the shot put (14.94 meters, 14'-00.25"), while the Flashes picked up twelve additional top-five finishes in the first competition of 2019.
From the men's team, 2018 First Team All-American (heptathlon) and Second Team All-Mid-American Conference (long jump) TJ Lawson is scheduled to make his season debut in the shot put, in addition to five athletes that are currently ranked in the top five in the conference. Sophomore Jake Wickey is ranked third in the conference with his MAC-auto mark of 19.24m (63'- 01.50") in the weight throw, while junior Walter Petzel stands in third in the MAC in the shot put. Senior Brandon Wilson will is tied for fifth 60-meter dash, senior D.J. Ohlson is tied for fifth in the high jump, and sophomore Anthony Milliner ranks fifth in the conference in the triple jump.
On the women's side, three athletes that are ranked in the top-five in the conference are scheduled to be in action Friday. Sophomore Alyssa Matheny owns the conference's top mark in the high jump from her performance in Ann Arbor (1.75m, 5'-08.75"). Tennant ranks fourth in the conference in the shot put, while junior Mi'angel Daniels ranks fifth in the conference in the 60-meter hurdles with a MAC-auto time from the Wolverine Invitational of 8.55.
The event will be scored as a dual meet with 5-3-2-1 points being awarded for individual events with two scores per team, while relays will be scored with the winner being awarded five points and the runner-up three points. Tickets are $10 (cash only) and can be purchased at the door.
