KENT, Ohio – The Kent State soccer team (5-7-3, 3-3-2 MAC) played a physical match on Sunday afternoon and earned a point in the Mid-American Conference standings in a 1-1 draw against Central Michigan (7-3-3, 4-3-1 MAC). Junior Vital Kats scored the Golden Flashes lone goal in the 30th minute and has now registered a point in every MAC match.
"It was a very big physical game, and I think we matched up with the physicality of the match," said Kent State head coach Rob Marinaro. "We still need to come back and continue to play our game, the intensity, fight and set pieces were excellent for us today. You have to give the team credit and move forward from here."
The Chippewas were quick to strike in the third minute and connected off a throw in to place a shot into the low left corner of the net.
Kats had the equalizer off a free kick that found the near side of the net. The Toronto, Ontario native has scored in each of the last three games and leads the team with 21 points on the season.
It was a physical second period, Central Michigan had a chance at the goal and put a ball in the net, but it was ruled offsides. Kent State redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Faith O'Neill (5-7-3) was consistent between the pipes and registered six saves in 110 minutes. CMU keeper Zoie Reed (7-3-3) made three stops.
KSU defended corner kicks well and did not allow CMU to sniff a good opportunity on 10 tries.
The Golden Flashes hit the road for their final road swing of the regular season next week when they play at Ball State on Thursday, October 24th at 3:30 p.m. The weekend wraps up at Miami on Sunday, October 27th at 1 p.m.
