MUNCIE, Ind. – Despite a late comeback attempt, the Kent State soccer team (5-8-3, 3-4-2 MAC) dropped a Mid-American Conference match at Ball State (12-4-0, 7-2-0 MAC), 3-2, on Thursday afternoon. Despite outshooting the Cardinals 25-12, the Golden Flashes played from behind for nearly the entirety of the match.
Kent State spotted Ball State a goal in the third minute as the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on an own goal. On a corner kick, the ball deflected off a Kent State head into the net and the Flashes were forced to play from behind all afternoon. The Cardinals scored again in the 14th minute as Nicky Potts was isolated against redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Faith O'Neill and flicked the ball over her to put BSU up, 2-0.
Junior Cameron Shedenhelm started the KSU offense in the 22nd minute with her sixth goal of the year placing a shot in the center of the net. Freshman Grace Wolber registered her first career assist on the play.
The Cardinals made it a 3-1 game in the 63rd minute on a Lizzie Philibin score.
Kent State redshirt freshman Tianna Harris scored her second career goal on a set piece to draw the Flashes back within one in the 73rd minute. Redshirt sophomore Karly Hellstrom tallied the assist. Junior Vital Kats attempted to tie the game in the 87th minute, but Cardinals keeper Tristin Stuteville made a tremendous save to hold the score.
The Golden Flashes led in shots on goal (16-6) while Ball State led in corner kicks (4-3).
O'Neill (5-8-3) allowed two goals while making four saves. Stuteville (12-4-0) faced heavily pressure all afternoon and allowed two goals and made 14 saves.
Kent State plays its final regular season road match of the season on Sunday, October 27th at Miami at 1 p.m.
