KENT, Ohio – Freshman Asiah Dingle provided the winning points on two free throws with 5.5 on the clock, as Kent State was victorious over visiting Bowling Green, 77-73, in Saturday's Play4Kay game.
Following a timeout with the scored knotted at 73, Dingle was able to elude a defender to get into the paint and draw a foul call on her attempt at the basket. The freshman point guard calmly sank both shots at the charity stripe.
"We wanted to get Asiah to the basket and make them defend without fouling," said head coach Todd Starkey. "They stayed on our shooters, rotated late, and we got the foul call. Asiah is our best foul shooter percentage-wise, so we are comfortable with her going to the line in that situation."
The Falcons turned it over on the ensuing possession, as senior Alexa Golden rotate in help defense to force the BG post player to spin the opposite way, fumbling the ball out of bounds out of bounds in the process. Redshirt junior Megan Carter was then fouled and added two free throws for the final score.
The Golden Flashes (14-9, 7-5 MAC) improved to 9-2 inside of the M.A.C. Center and have won four of the last five games.
Four Kent State players scored in double-figures. Dingle led all players with 21 points, which included 13 after halftime. Junior Ali Poole drained four three-pointers and finished with 17 points. Carter scored 16 and freshman Lindsey Thall added 12 points.
The Flashes held a 32-28 rebounding advantage. Poole led the way with six boards and Thall was right behind with five.
Kent State forced 23 turnovers in the contest and had 13 steals. Dingle led the defensive pressure with five swipes, matching her career-high. Golden added four steals.
The Flashes will conclude the season series with Western Michigan and travel to Kalamazoo on Wednesday, Feb. 20 before returning home for the final two games in February.
