Comeback Effort Falls Short in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Once again, Kent State showed that it can compete with anybody in the Mid-American Conference when playing its best Saturday afternoon in a 75-66 loss at Buffalo.
The Golden Flashes (12-9, 5-5 MAC) outscored their host 28-12 over a span of 13:43 during the second half to make it a four-point game after trailing by 20 less than two minutes into the third period. Kent State then went more than three minutes before scoring again, as the Bulls pushed their lead back to double-digits.
Redshirt junior Megan Carter and junior Ali Poole led the Flashes with 16 points each. Senior Alexa Golden was right behind with 15 points while leading the team with four assists and three steals.
The three-point shot aided in its comeback attempt, as Kent State drained four in a row during the middle of the third period. The Flashes shot 10-for-24 (41.7-percent) and made double-figure trifectas for the seventh time this season. Golden, Poole and freshman Lindsey Thall each had three buckets from long range.
Buffalo held a slim 36-35 rebounding advantage, but led 17-7 in second chance scoring. Senior Merissa Barber-Smith grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for Kent State.
The Bulls scored 28 points off 20 Flashes turnovers and led 25-8 in fast break points.
Kent State will play seek a season sweep of Eastern Michigan when it travels to Ypsilanti on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
