KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University baseball team topped Malone (20-11, 10-4 GMAC) 14-6 in a midweek matchup at Schoonover Stadium Tuesday evening. The Flashes collected a season-high 16 walks, eight hits and six hit batters in the victory, snapping the Pioneers' 10-game winning streak.
The Flashes jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, seeing the full lineup step to the plate. He advanced to third on a wild pitch before junior Cam Touchette knocked him in with a single through the left side. Touchette eventually scored on a Malone error. Junior Patrick Ferguson and senior Josh Hollander each added a run with sacrifice flies, and junior Alex Ronnebaum recorded an RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the remainder of the inning.
Kent State added a run an inning later with a sacrifice fly ball off the bat of senior Pavin Parks.
The Pioneers rallied for four runs on five hits in the top of the third, however the Flashes poured on four additional runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the score to 10-4. Carew drew a lead-off walk and Touchette was plunked before senior Pete Schuler recorded an RBI with a single to right field and forced a Malone pitching change. With two outs, Schuler stole second and senior Kian O'Brien was hit by a pitch. Parks then reached on a fielding error that scored Touchette and Ronnebaum drew his second bases-loaded walk of the game. Hollander followed with another RBI-walk to round out the inning.
Malone notched its final two runs in the top of the fourth inning, and the score remained until the Flashes added three runs in the bottom of the fifth. O'Brien and Parks were walked and Ronnebaum was hit to lead off the inning. Hollander recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice and Carew scored Parks with a single to shortstop and Touchette walked and eventually scored on a passed ball.
The Flashes scored the final run of the game in the seventh inning when Touchette drew the fourth bases-loaded walk of the day.
