The Kent State soccer team (1-3-1) is on the road for a single-match against Butler (4-3-0) on Sunday, November 15th at 1 p.m. The Golden Flashes are in search of their first road win of the season after defeating Syracuse at home last weekend.
Last Time Out
Kent State utilized an early goal by redshirt sophomore Karly Hellstrom and strong team defense to shutout Syracuse, 1-0, to earn its first win of the 2019 campaign at Dix Stadium. With the win, the Golden Flashes swept the Orange in the home-and-home series and have beaten an ACC school in each of the last four years.
The Flashes also recorded their second shutout of the year and the second for redshirt sophomore Faith O'Neill. KSU scored on a set piece in the 21st minute. Junior Cameron Shedenhelm took the throw in and junior Maddie Holmes headed it to Hellstrom to complete the goal from the right side of the net. It was Hellstrom's second goal of the campaign, and the first goal scored by the team on Dix Stadium's turf.
Hellstrom Named MAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Hellstrom netted the game-winning goal against Syracuse in the Golden Flashes 1-0 win against their Atlantic Coast Conference counterpart. Hellstrom totaled five shots and placed two on target for the week. The Sudbury, Ontario native collected her second goal of the year and both of her scores this season have come against Power 5 competition. She earned her first at Colorado to give the Flashes an early lead. It's the first time in her career she has received a weekly conference award.
Flashes Picked Third in MAC Preseason Poll
The Golden Flashes were tabbed to finish third in the Mid-American Conference preseason coaches' poll and received three votes to win the league's postseason tournament. Kent State had the second-most tournament championship votes behind last season's regular season and tournament champion, Bowling Green. Kent State finished the 2018 campaign with its eighth consecutive 10-win season and is the only MAC team to accomplish that mark.
Scouting Butler
The Bulldogs have dropped three of their last four but have played quality competition. They fell 2-1 at home to Illinois on Thursday and also have a 2-1 setback to No. 15 Wisconsin. Butler has recorded two 3-0 shutouts this season against Morehead State and Michigan State. Katie Soderstrom paces the squad with 13 pts (3g, 7a). The Bulldogs are the highest scoring team in the BIG EAST averaging 2.29 goals per game.
Series History
The series is deadlocked at 1-1-1. Butler invaded Dix Stadium and handed KSU a rare home loss last season, winning the campaign lidlifter, 3-1. Kent State defeated the Bulldogs, 2-1, in the 2015 matchup in Indianapolis.
Next Up
Kent State will play its regular season non-conference finale Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. on the road against Youngstown State. It's the first matchup between the Northeast Ohio schools on the pitch since 2013.
