Kent State Earns Split Friday in West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. –Kent State went 1-1 Friday on the opening day of the Black Knight Invitational. The Golden Flashes started the day with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) win against Binghamton and then came up just short against Bryant, 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-14, 13-15).
Freshmen Savannah Matthews and Morgan Copley were the top scorers for Kent State (6-3) on the day. Matthews posted a team-high 22 kills and added 17 digs, while Copley had 18 kills and seven total blocks.
National digs leader Erin Gardner anchored a defense that limited the opposition to a .141 hitting percentage and finished the day with 47Â digs.
Match 1: Kent State 3, Binghamton 0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16)
Kent State started the day with its third 3-0 sweep in as many weekends. Ashley Makruski led all players with 10 kills. Morgan Copley was right behind with nine kills and only one error on 14 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. Alex Haffner totaled 24 assists and added seven digs.
Erin Gardner tallied a match-high 15 digs to lead the floor defense. Gracey Jarecke contributed seven digs.
Match 2: Bryant 3, Kent State 2 (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-14, 13-15)
Despite holding a 13-12 lead in the final set, Kent State dropped its first five-setter of the season.
Savannah Matthews and Natalie Tagala registered double-doubles for the Golden Flashes. Matthews led the offense with 14 kills and added 13 digs on defense. Tagala totaled a team-high 23 assists to go with 10 digs.
Erin Gardner had a match-high 32 digs and Carissa Reyes added 15Â digs.
